Quezon City offers senior high school program for inmates

Elizabeth Marcelo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory (QCJMD) to offer senior high school program to inmates.

“Inmates in the city can now continue their basic education through the senior high school program to be offered by the Schools Division Office,” the local government said in a statement yesterday.

Under the agreement, the Fernando C. Amorsolo Senior High School will offer technical, vocational and livelihood strand specializing in home economics, bread and pastry production, cookery and commercial cooking, information and communications technology, computer programming as well as shielded metal arc welding to inmates.

Upon graduation, the inmates can obtain a National Certificate Level II once they pass the competency-based assessment of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

“It is the right of every citizen to have access to quality education. Here in Quezon City, we will not allow a person’s status in life to become a hindrance in obtaining education,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said. “There’s equal and inclusive education opportunity for all.”

QCJMD warden Supt. Michelle Bonto thanked the city government, saying the program would help boost the capability and morale of inmates.
