Quezon City prosecutor’s office indicts Ateneo gunman

MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City prosecutor’s office has indicted physician Chao-Tiao Yumol for a string of criminal cases for killing three persons and wounding two others at the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU). Maj. Wennie Ann Cale, spokesperson for the Quezon City Police District, confirmed yesterday the development in a text message to The STAR.

Yumol is facing three counts of murder for killing former Lamitan, Basilan mayor Rose Furigay, her aide Victor Capistrano and Ateneo security guard Jeneven Bandiala.

A complaint for frustrated murder was also filed against Yumol for the injuries suffered by Furigay’s daughter Hannah Rose Marian.

Yumol was also indicted for malicious mischief and violating Republic Act 10883 or the anti-car theft law and RA 10591, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it would hold a dialogue with school authorities to prevent a repeat of the fatal shooting at the ADMU.

PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao said they plan to sit down with school representatives and other stakeholders.

“We will present our detailed security plans for the opening of classes and how to strictly implement procedures against unauthorized persons,” Danao said in a statement.

He said they are backing the call of Education Secretary and Vice President Sara Duterte for the need to emphasize awareness on gun violence.

Yumol’s FB, IG accounts shut down

Meanwhile, technology company Meta has taken down the Facebook and Instagram accounts of Yumol.

Meta said it designated the Ateneo shooting under its Dangerous Individuals and Organizations policy, which means “we will continue to remove content that praises, supports or represents the suspect.”

“In line with this policy, we have removed the Facebook and Instagram accounts belonging to Yumol. We encourage the people to report content that may be violating our policies so our teams can review and take action,” it added.

Under Meta’s policy, content that praises, supports or represent events designated as “violent” are prohibited. This includes murder, such as in the case of the Ateneo shooting.

Before it was taken down, Yumol’s page had the “blue check” verification mark from Facebook.
