MANILA, Philippines — Citing his troubled past, Sen. Robin Padilla yesterday urged Muslims who still prefer violence as a way of life to change their ways.

Padilla said violence and extremism have no place in the country, adding that people of different religious beliefs should always live in peace.

“We should not allow killings, whether of our family members or those we do not know. Islam is love for one another, for peace,” he said in a speech during the commemoration of Eid al-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice held at Camp Karingal in Quezon City.

Padilla was the guest of honor and speaker at the activity organized by Quezon City Police District director Brig. Gen. Remus Medina and attended by around 1,000 Muslims.

Padilla, who is also an actor, recalled his troubled past where he was jailed in 1995 for illegal possession of firearms. He said his life changed when he was introduced to Islam.

From being a convict, Padilla said he is now a senator of the country, topping the elections last May.

Philippine National Police officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. lauded Muslims for their unwavering devotion and faith.

“We will continuously stand in unity with you as we all work toward a peaceful and more progressive country,” he said in a statement.
