Navotas, Malabon hit by ammonia leak

Ghio Ong - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Two ice plants in the cities of Navotas and Malabon were hit by ammonia leak on Saturday night.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) reported the first ammonia leak at the Magsimpan ice plant along M. Naval street in Barangay NBBS Proper, Navotas at around 9 p.m.

Reports said a maintenance personnel of the ice plant smelled foul odor at around 9 p.m. while cleaning up the remaining liquid sludge in the factory.

The ammonia leak was controlled at past 10 p.m., according to the BFP.

Last April, authorities said more than a dozen residents were hospitalized due to ammonia leak in the ice plant.

The BFP on Sunday responded to another incident of ammonia leak at 168 Tube Ice Corp. along Bustamante street in Barangay Tinajeros, Malabon.

There were no injuries reported due to the incidents of ammonia leak.

Ammonia serves as a refrigerant that keeps food and drinks cold. Experts advised people to cover their faces with a damp cloth and stay away from the area where the ammonia leak was reported.
