MANILA, Philippines — Artist’s collective Gerilya and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) yesterday unveiled a sculpture depicting the struggles of the working class, which has been installed at the Lagusnilad underpass in Manila.
Mayor Isko Moreno and his successor, mayor-elect Honey Lacuna, attended the unveiling of the bas relief sculpture.
Gerilya artists were commissioned by the NCCA to make the sculpture, which was installed by the Escuela Taller de Filipinas Foundation.
According to the NCCA, the sculpture is part of the “Masigasig na Maynila” mural unveiled in August 2020 at the underpass that connects the Manila city hall and Intramuros.
The sculpture includes bas relief images of farmers, fisherfolk, engineers, construction workers and office workers.
Gerilya, formed in 2008 at the University of the Philippines College of Arts in Diliman, is involved in comics, street art, graffiti animation and illustrated commissions.
The pedestrian underpass used to be choked with vendors until it was renovated in 2019 when Moreno assumed office.
