Pampanga Good Friday crucifixions canceled anew

Ric Sapnu - The Philippine Star

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Philippines — The true-to-life crucifixion of penitents in Barangay Cutud in this city as part of Good Friday rituals was canceled again this year.

Mayor Edwin Santiago issued an executive order on Monday canceling Lenten activities, including the senakulo, self-flagellation and reenactment of the Way of the Cross, from April 10 to April 17.

Good Friday rituals in the city, which have become a tourist attraction, have been canceled in the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Santiago said the city government abides by the guidelines of the national pandemic task force to ensure public safety and compliance with minimum health protocols, noting that the city and entire province of Pampanga remain under Alert Level 1.

He said devotees, parishioners and the general public are encouraged to observe Holy Week by attending masses and other religious services and activities.

Barangay councils are tasked to implement, monitor and ensure compliance with the EO.
