Fishkill in Batangas due to ammonia leak?

Arnell Ozaeta - The Philippine Star

BATANGAS, Philippines — The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in Batangas is investigating if a fish kill in Lian town on Wednesday was due to an ammonia leak that hit an ice plant.

Environment officer Gani Amatorio said the extent of the fish kill has yet to be determined.

Initial investigation showed employees of Pantoja ice plant in Barangay Kapito were conducting maintenance works when they accidentally hit a valve that caused the leak.

“Habang kino-contain yung ammonia binugahan nila ng tubig... Dumiretso ang tubig sa creek... namatay ang mga isda,” Amatorio said.

The ice plant is near a residential area, but Amatorio said no one was hospitalized due to ingestion of ammonia.

Amatorio said the owner of the ice plant would be called to a meeting to shed light on the incident.
