MANILA, Philippines — The city government of Valenzuela recorded zero injuries caused by firecrackers during the New Year’s Eve revelry, Mayor Rexlon Gatchalian said yesterday.

It may be the “first time in (the city’s) history,” he said.

Gatchalian said there were zero admissions of firecracker-related injuries in private and public hospitals in the city as of 8 p.m. on Thursday and the city’s rescue unit did not receive any calls for such injuries.

In a tweet, Gatchalian also said no spent firecrackers or fireworks littered the streets, which was usually the case on New Year’s Day.

The city government enforced an ordinance prohibiting residents from using fireworks in celebrating the New Year.

Two men were fined P5,000 and may serve 30 days in jail for using firecrackers, Gatchalian said.

Meanwhile, the Northern Police District seized 300 kwitis, two whisky fountains, two fountain rounds and a Judas belt from vendor Jona Omega Balanon, 25, in Dagat-Dagatan, Caloocan on New Year’s Eve.
