Motorcycle dividers sell like hot cakes

MANILA, Philippines — Vendors of acrylic motorcycle barriers along the sidewalks of Quiapo, Manila and 10th Avenue in Caloocan City are doing brisk business as motorcyclists buy the protective dividers that will allow them to travel with companions.

A protective divider sells from P500 to P1,000 depending on the size and design.

According to vendors in Quiapo, their sales have increased since last week.

In Caloocan, motorcycle riders flocked to motorcycle shops to buy customized barriers.

A shop owner said they sell up to 35 units per day.

Robert Carunungan, a security guard, whose wife works at a shopping mall near the Manila city hall, said they had difficulty going to work after the government banned motorcycle back-riding for couples during the enhanced community quarantine.

A group of motorcyclists said these protective dividers for pillion riding may cause wind dragging, which could lead to road accidents.

The Motorcycle Philippines Federation said wearing protective gears such as face masks, face shields, helmets and gloves should be enough for the riders and their companions.
