CEBU, Philippines — The chief of police of a town in Cebu was arrested on Thursday night after he was allegedly caught sleeping with a 23-year-old female detainee at his quarters.
Maj. Ildefonso Miranda Jr. of the Argao police was apprehended by operatives of the Philippine National Police Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (IMEG) at the police station in Barangay Poblacion at around 11:20 p.m.
Another female detainee was reportedly found sleeping in Miranda’s office.
The two women were detained on drug charges.
The IMEG said the 46-year-old police official was allegedly having a sexual relationship with the inmate “in exchange for her privilege to sleep in his air-conditioned office.” The other detainee acts as Miranda’s “helper.”
Miranda had been under surveillance by the IMEG Visayas Field Unit amid reports that female detainees were staying and sleeping in his office.
Brig. Gen. Ignatius Ferro, Central Visayas police director, said he would recommend summary dismissal proceedings against Miranda for gross violation of police procedures.
Miranda was stripped of his service firearms: a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and Piertro Beretta.
The IMEG said Miranda could face imprisonment for removing confined persons from detention through intimidation and bribery.
Charges of direct bribery and violation of Republic Act 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and Article 156 of the Revised Penal Code, which refers to the delivery of prisoners from jail will be filed against him.
