MANILA, Philippines — At least P250,000 in cash, drugs and other contraband were confiscated yesterday by officers of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) who raided the Correctional Institution for Women.
Of the amount, P150,000 was recovered from convicted Taiwanese drug queen Yu Yuk Lai, according to authorities.
Yu also yielded packs of shabu, BuCor chief Gerald Bantag said.
Bantag said they would conduct a probe to determine how Yu got hold of the cash since inmates are only allowed to carry P2,000 monthly.
Bantag said pointed objects, solar panels, gambling cards, toys and jewelry were confiscated from the other inmates.
It was the first raid on the women’s penitentiary since Bantag assumed the BuCor post last year.
Previously, a Senate probe had revealed that Yu was allowed by corrections officials to be confined for months at the Metropolitan Hospital in Manila.
