Cop shot dead in Malate restaurant

MANILA, Philippines — Investigators are looking into the motive behind the killing of a police officer in a restaurant in Malate, Manila on Thursday night.

S/Sgt. Roel Orihuela, 47, was watching television in the restaurant where his brother was working when the assailants fired at the policeman at around 8:45 p.m., according to Capt. Henry Navarro, chief of the Manila Police District homicide unit.

Orihuela was rushed to the Ospital ng Maynila where he was declared dead on arrival.

A source said the victim was recently recalled to the Philippine National Police headquarters at Camp Crame and reassigned to the office of PNP chief Gen. Archie Francisco Gamboa.
