IMEG: Half of cops nabbed in 2019 with NCRPO
MANILA, Philippines — More than half of suspected police scalawags arrested in law enforcement operations last year were assigned with the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), according to the police Integrity Monitoring Group (IMEG).
Data from IMEG showed that of the 52 police officers arrested in 2019, 27 or about 51.92 percent were from the NCRPO.
They were arrested in entrapment operations for crimes such as robbery extortion, illegal drugs and illegal gambling.
The 27,000-strong NCRPO is the unit of the Philippine National Police (PNP) tasked with securing Metro Manila.
A far second is the Central Luzon police with five corrupt police officers arrested or nine percent and the Health Service with four or about 7.6 percent.
The number of police officers arrested for various offenses rose by 18.18 from 44 in 2018 to 52 in 2019.
Seven of the lawmen arrested last year are commissioned officers while the rest are non-commissioned officers.
IMEG spokesperson Capt. Mae Ann Cunanan attributed the increase to the public’s awareness of the PNP’s intensified campaign against corrupt police officers.
