Special polls for Benguet congressional seat mulled
BAGUIO CITY , Philippines – The House of Representatives is looking at the possibility of holding a special election for a seat vacated by the late Benguet congressman Nestor Fongwan Sr.
Fongwan succumbed to an illness in December, five months after assuming the post as representative of the lone district of Benguet.
The Benguet provincial board passed a resolution calling for a special election to fill up Fongwan’s post.
Speaker Allan Peter Cayetano appointed last week ACT-CIS partylist Rep. Eric Go Yap as caretaker before receiving the Benguet leaders’ plea.
Cayetano said Yap’s appointment was meant to fill the vacancy so as not to hamper government services for Benguet.
He said he met with Baguio Rep. Marquez Go, Abra Rep. JB Bernos and the family of Fongwan, who all approved of Yap as caretaker.
