Jail escapee killed in encounter with cops

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines  – One of two inmates who ecaped from a police lockup in Balayan, Batangas on Friday last week was killed in an alleged shootout with pursuing law enforcers on Wednesday.

Salvador de Ocampo, 43, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Don Manuel Lopez Hospital, according to Capt. Hazel Suarez, Batangas police spokesperson.

Suarez said the escapee, who was found hiding in a fishing boat in Barangay Palikpikan, fired at police officers.

Col. Edwin Quilates, Batangas police director, said De Ocampo and Roderick Legaspi, 42, escaped by knocking down a wall in their cell.

The escapees reportedly burned papers and shouted fire to create confusion among the other inmates and police officers.
