Cable car connecting Baguio to La Union eyed
MANILA, Philippines — The Baguio City government and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) are eyeing a cable car system to ease traffic congestion in the summer capital.
DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade “offered for the city to enter into a memorandum of agreement with the department for the pursuit of a cable car system,” the city government’s public information office announced on Wednesday.
The cable car will connect Baguio City to Pugo town in La Union.
During a meeting with Mayor Benjamin Magalong last week, Tugade said he instructed DOTr Undersecretary Mark Richmund de Leon to fasttrack the deal for the project.
Early this year, Tugade said he was in talks with a businessman for the development of a cable car system that would connect malls in Parañaque, Las Piñas and Alabang.
He said a French-funded feasibility study for an urban cable car project would soon be completed.
The French government granted a P27-million grant for the feasibility study.
Tugade said the French government also expressed interest in building the project.
