MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) should allow new buses to serve Commonwealth Avenue to ease the daily plight of commuters stranded for hours, an administration lawmaker said yesterday.

Rep. Precious Hipolito-Castelo said the LTFRB’s provisional authority will allow new buses in Commonwealth to ferry “thousands of stranded commuters spilling over four lanes of the avenue during rush hour” due to the lack of buses.

She said the traffic congestion is made worse by the construction of the Metro Rail Transit Line 7.

Castelo, vice chairperson of the House committee on Metro Manila development, warned that Commonwealth Avenue could become the “next EDSA” if the problem is left unattended.

“We should heed the telltale signs of another EDSA and take the necessary measures as early as possible,” she said.
