MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) yesterday deployed 48 motorcycle-riding policewomen to help ease traffic congestion along EDSA and other major thoroughfares.
HPG director Brig. Gen. Eliseo Cruz said the female riders would assist government personnel who are manning traffic along major roads in Metro Manila.
The policewomen underwent a 45-day training on traffic management and motorcycle safety, Cruz said.
At least 20 policewomen were deployed on EDSA, known as the busiest highway in the National Capital Region, especially during rush hour. The rest were deployed in other regions.
Cruz said aside from traffic supervision, the policewomen could also respond to crimes and other emergencies.
“Ready sila mag-respond sa anumang crime incidents,” he said.
Cruz said the presence of the policewomen on the field is proof that the PNP is for gender equality and women empowerment.
“Kung ano ang ginagawa ng lalaki ay dapat ginagawa ng babae dito sa PNP,” he said.
The HPG earlier deployed 171 policemen to work with traffic enforcers of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to improve the flow of vehicles along EDSA.
