Probe of Iloilo sea mishap starts
MANILA, Philippines — An interagency panel has started its investigation into a boat-sinking incident in the Iloilo-Guimaras Strait on Aug. 3 that left 31 people dead.
The Department of Transporation gave assurance that it would uphold fairness and impartiality in the investigation.
Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade had earlier ordered the relief of officials of Philippine Coast Guard stations in Iloilo and Guimaras and Maritime Industry Authority (Marina)-Western Visayas to ensure an impartial probe.
“If their case withstands the rigors of the investigation, the dignity of their names will be restored,” PCG commandant Admiral Elson Hermogino said.
Marina officer-in-charge Narciso Vingson Jr. said the agency owes it to the victims and their families to ensure that the investigation would be ”100 percent fair.”
Meanwhile, Vice President Leni Robredo yesterday handed cash assistance to the survivors as well as families of the fatalities.
The Office of the Vice President said it would also provide psychosocial services.
“They have been going through a very difficult time because of trauma... We will not only help them financially but also assist them in their other needs,” Robredo said. – Helen Flores
