126 stranded tourists rescued in Visayas

MANILA, Philippines — More than a hundred tourists were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) from the Gigantes Island in Iloilo during the onslaught of Typhoon Hanna.

The PCG was delivering 3,500 food packs prepared by the Department of Social Welfare and Development for residents of the island when they discovered that tourists had been stuck in the area for days.

Travel to and from the island, which is located off Carles town, was stopped for several days due to Hanna and the southwest monsoon.

The island has four barangays and more than 17,000 residents.

PCG Western Visayas District chief Commodore Allan dela Vega said the multi-role response vessel BRP Cape Engano was dispatched to the area after they received reports that the island was experiencing food shortage.

The municipal government has reportedly declared a state of calamity on the island due to the calamity.

“Because of the prevailing gale warning and rough sea conditions, boats were prevented from sailing, stranding the 126 tourists who have been in the island since Aug. 4,” Dela Vega said.

After unloading the relief goods, the Cape Engano transported the tourists to Iloilo City. Every one was in good physical condition.
