FDA orders seizure of ‘poisonous’ gin

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said yesterday it has ordered the seizure of all Cosmic Carabao gin products in the market after its samples were found to contain high levels of methanol.

Acting FDA director general Enrique Domingo called on the Philippine National Police and local government units to seal and confiscate all Cosmic Carabao gin products in their areas of jurisdiction.

He also ordered the sealing of all raw materials and the seizure of unregistered products of manufacturer Juan Brewing Inc.

Domingo said the firm is licensed to manufacture and distribute liquor but its Cosmic Carabao gin is not registered with the FDA.

High concentrations of methanol – a chemical used in household products and aircraft fuel – can lead to poisoning.
