SANTIAGO CITY, Isabela , Philippines  —  Maj. Gen. Ramiro Rey assumed his post as Northern Luzon Command (Nolcom) chief on Friday.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Gen. Benjamin Madrigal Jr. led the change of command ceremony at Camp Aquino in San Miguel, Tarlac City.

Rey replaced Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Salamat, who retired after 38 years of military service.

President Duterte recently announced that he is designating Salamat as head of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System.

Rey, who was former chief of the Special Operations Command, also served as  commander of the Joint Task Force Ranao, which was in charge of the military operations in Marawi in 2017.

“I am honored to be called the commander of the north, where high-risk missions and challenges are common. My work here in Nolcom will not be easy. I know the responsibilities will be tremendous,” Rey said in his speech at the turnover ceremony.

The Nolcom is handling  the AFP’s anti-terrorism and counterinsurgency campaign in Central and Northern Luzon.
