Woman, daughter die in Quezon City fire

MANILA, Philippines — A mother and her daughter died after they were trapped in their burning house in Quezon City on Thursday night.

Arson probers identified the fatalities as Julieta Bulaon, 70, and her daughter Marisa Leano, 39.

The bodies of Bulaon and Leano were recovered in their apartment along Aguila street in Barangay Talipapa.

Leano’s 12-year-old daughter, Pearl Chloe, told authorities that she was roused from sleep as she suffered shortness of breath.

She said she jumped from the roof as flames engulfed the house.

Three others – Joel Sacdalan, 46; Renz Hige, 21, and Neil Severa, 38 – suffered minor injuries during the incident.

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the blaze broke out at around 9:50 p.m. and reached the first alarm before it was put out before 10:30 p.m.

Arson investigators said an unattended candle caused the fire as the house had no electricity.

Damage to property was estimated at P50,000.
