Ex-Abra governor Andres Bernos, 81

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines — A former governor and patriarch of a political clan in Abra, Andres Bernos, died on Friday, three days after he underwent a quadruple bypass. He was 81.

Bernos who was “stricken with severe pneumonia, which eventually led to septic shock,” died at around 9:26 p.m., according to a medical bulletin released by the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Global City.

He was confined on June 8 for “congestive heart failure and due acute myocardial infraction (heart attack), severe aortic stenosis and acute kidney injury on top of pre-existing chronic kidney disease,” the medical bulletin read.

Bernos’ remains, which lie at the Sanctuarium in Quezon City,  would be brought to Abra on Tuesday.

The former governor also served as mayor of La Paz town and vice mayor of Danglas.

Most of Bernos’ family members, including his in-laws, are holding elective positions in Abra’s major towns, including its capital Bangued.
