MANILA, Philippines — A nun and a volunteer firefighter were hurt in a blaze that broke out at a convent in Quezon City shortly after midnight yesterday.

Sister Bernadette Albuquerque, a 69-year-old Indian, sustained first-degree burns on her forearms while Tommy de Leon, 30, suffered a laceration on his right hand.

The fire, the cause of which is still under investigation, reportedly started in a bedroom on the second floor of the the Sister’s of Saint Anne convent along Dama de Noche street in Barangay Mariana at around 12:18 a.m.

The fire reached second alarm and destroyed three houses, leaving six families homeless, before it was put out 30 minutes later.

Arson investigators estimated that the fire caused P100,000 in structural damage.
