PNP braces for Holy Week travelers

Non Alquitran - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is on full alert starting today for the expected surge of travelers during the Holy Week break.

Those traveling to the provinces should follow the safety measures being implemented by the PNP, Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director, urged the public.

Eleazar talked to travelers and asked for their suggestions and complaints when he inspected bus terminals yesterday.

He ordered the posting of the PNP’s “Ligtas sa Iyong Paglalakbay” at bus terminals to serve as guide to travelers.

Eleazar said 11,500 police officers would be deployed to secure bus terminals,  seaports, airports and vital government and private installations, including embassies and residences of foreign dignitaries.

“Aside from police personnel, we will deploy K9 units and establish police assistance desks,” Eleazar said.

The NCRPO coordinated with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, local government units, force multipliers, volunteer groups and other concerned agencies to ensure the safety and protection of the public and their properties.

Meanwhile, at least 2,000 Philippine Red Cross (PRC) personnel and 150 ambulances will be deployed nationwide to provide assistance and respond to any emergency during Holy Week.

“We will put up welfare desks in strategic areas to accommodate... inquiries and concerns,” PRC chairman Sen. Richard Gordon said.

Gordon said PRC chapters across the country are also on full alert.
