Supreme Court junks citizenship case vs La Union lawmaker

Jun Elias - The Philippine Star

AGOO, La Union, Philippines  —  The Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed a petition questioning the citizenship of La Union second district Rep. Sandra Eriguel.

In a resolution released recently, the high tribunal junked the petition for certiorari filed by Tomas Dumpit after the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) ruled in favor of Eriguel.

The SC said Dumpit’s petition failed to sufficiently show that the HRET committed grave abuse of discretion when it ruled that Eriguel is a natural-born Filipino and eligible to be a member of the House of Representatives.

Dumpit and Eriguel both ran for representative of La Union’s second district in the May 2016 elections.

Eriguel was proclaimed winner after obtaining 150,020 votes against Dumpit’s 40,201 votes.

They will be pitted against each other again in the May 13 elections.
