MANILA, Philippines — With the onset of summer, the Department of Health (DOH) will ensure the safety of people who will be flocking to beach resorts in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon).

Eduardo Janairo, chief of DOH-Calabarzon, yesterday said they are conducting regular lifeguard training to ensure the safety and security of tourists and beachgoers. The region has 70 trained lifeguards.

“Preventing water-related accidents and ensuring the safety of all individuals going to the beaches this summer are very important. Every establishment with pools and beaches must have at least one lifeguard to address any emergency situation,” Janairo said.

He gave assurance that the lifeguards are physically fit and capable of responding to emergencies.

“They were told to lessen or avoid smoking and alcoholic drinks as these can affect their perception and awareness while on duty. Their presence of mind is very important because they are at the forefront of preventing accidents and saving lives,” Janairo said.

The DOH and the Philippine Coast Guard will coordinate with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority for the inclusion of the lifeguard qualification training course in the TESDA program.

Finishing the course will make participants duly certified lifeguards.

Janairo said the DOH would continue to provide more lifeguard training until all accredited establishments in the region have their own licensed lifeguards.
