Barangay captain, 3 others held for guns, ammo

MANILA, Philippines — Four persons, including a barangay chairman, were arrested for illegal possession of firearms and explosives in Zambales and Cagayan last week.

Police said Eduardo Lopes Sr., 61, chairman of Barangay Aglao in San Marcelino, Zambales, yielded a caliber .45 pistol, a caliber .25, a shotgun, a gun of unknown caliber and various types of ammunition.

Olongapo City Regional Trial Court Branch 74 Judge Roline Ginez-Jabalde issued the search warrant.

In Cagayan, three suspected members of a private armed group were arrested in Barangay Cataratan, Allapacan town.

Senior Inspector Nestor Pascual, Allapacan, police chief, said an M16 rifle, a caliber .45 pistol and ammunition were recovered during a raid on the house of Melecio Alonzo, 52.

A 12 gauge shotgun, and a caliber .38 revolver were reportedly seized from the house of cousins Ruben, 50, and Sofronio, 46, both surnamed Taneza. – Raymund Catindig
