2 grenades found in Tondo
MANILA, Philippines — Two grenades were found in a backpack left along the road in Tondo, Manila Friday night.
A seven-year-old scavenger found the backpack at the corner of Road 10 and Capulong street at around 9 p.m.
The boy carried the backpack to a nearby Commission on Elections checkpoint, manned by officers from the Manila Police District (MPD) Station 1.
A rifle grenade and an MK2 fragmentation grenade – put in a plastic bottle and attached to a bottle of explosive chemical – were found in the backpack, according to MPD Explosives and Ordnance Division chief Inspector Arnold Yanga.
Police tightened the security in the area following the discovery of the grenades, which they said could be linked to a gang war in the area.
A man may have abandoned the bag upon seeing the police checkpoint, Yanga said.
