35 trucks of trash hauled from Divisoria on morning of January 1
MANILA, Philippines — The city government of Manila on Tuesday collected 35 truckloads of garbage produced by vendors in Divisoria.
Che Borromeo, who heads the Manila Task Force Cleanup, said they hauled 380 tons of garbage – equivalent to 35 trucks – during the cleanup operation along Recto Avenue from Abad Santos to Asuncion streets.
The task force is composed of personnel from the city government’s department of public services, engineering department, Manila Action and Special Assignment and Bureau of Fire Protection.
Borromeo said they started the clearing operation at 4 a.m. Tuesday, noting that most of the collected garbage were plastics, scrap metal, polystyrene, cigarette butts, paper and carton.
“We have allowed the vendors to sell their products during the Christmas season. Now that the Christmas season is over, we want to bring back the stretch of Recto Avenue and the other adjacent streets in Divisoria to the people by making it accessible, free of vendors, garbage and other obstructions,” Mayor Joseph Estrada said.
He said the vendors can sell their products only at designated areas and not on center islands.
