Warring UP fraternity members face expulsion

MANILA, Philippines — Members of two fraternities who were involved in altercations inside the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City this week may face expulsion, an official said yesterday.

UP Diliman chancellor Michael Tan said they are currently investigating the reported incidents between members of the Upsilon Sigma Phi and Alpha Phi Beta, who have engaged in several physical confrontations, including one supposedly involving weapons.

“The incidents are being investigated and charges will be filed against those found to be criminally liable,” Tan said. “The penalties for violence are severe, and can include expulsion from the university.”

A statement issued by the UP Diliman university student council said at least two incidents between the two fraternities occurred this week.

It said guards had to intervene during the scuffle at Palma Hall on Tuesday, while another “involving weapons” occurred along Magsaysay Avenue inside the university. 

Tan said a truce was declared between the two fraternities.

Tan said they will investigate unauthorized release of the closed-circuit television  footage of the scuffle to the media.

“This unauthorized release is being investigated and highlights why we need to enforce the Data Privacy Law: CCTV footage, in the wrong hands, can lead to speculation and a violation of due process,” he said.
