BUTUAN CITY, Philippines — The wife of Bislig City Mayor Librado Navarro was shot dead at around 7 p.m. last Saturday while she was preparing for the International Conference on Organic Farming at the city’s baywalk.
Carmencita Navarro, 62, was shot in the head, said Bislig police Chief Inspector Ephraim Megreño.
Initial investigation showed that Navarro was with supporters when she was killed.
The suspect casually walked away from the crime scene and boarded a motorcycle, Megreño said in a statement.
Navarro was brought to a hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
She supported her husband’s aim for Bislig to become the Model City for Organic Agriculture in the Philippines by 2020.
She was reportedly planning to run for Bislig mayor in next year’s midterm elections.
Megreño said all motives behind the killing, including politics, will be investigated.
Scene of the Crime Operatives were reportedly set to perform an autopsy.
The six-day farming conference begins today.
