Sacked town exec appointed OIC mayor
BASCO, Batanes, Philippines — A dismissed member of the municipal council of Ivana in this province has been designated as acting mayor.
Rosemarie Acebes, who was sacked by the Office of the Ombudsman in June 2011, was tasked by Mayor Leonardo Hotallero to take his place before leaving for Manila on Friday.
Although addressed to Vice Mayor Rommel Fidel, Hostallero’s order stated that Acebes would perform the duties and responsibilities of the mayor.
The order confused the municipal employees.
Maria Loida Urmatam, provincial director of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, called up Hostallero to clarify the order.
The mayor reportedly told Urmatam that he stands by his order.
Acebes was dismissed from the service after she failed to disclose that she was a relative of a former mayor who appointed her as secretary in 1996.
The anti-graft agency also cancelled Acebes’ eligibility, forfeited her retirement benefits and disqualified her from holding public office.
