Ex-lawmaker’s supporter wounded in ambush dies

SAN FERNANDO, La Union, Philippines — One of those wounded in the ambush that killed former La Union congressman Eufranio Eriguel on Saturday has died. 

Santiago Ricardo died while being treated at the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center in this city yesterday, according to Eriguel’s widow, incumbent La Union Rep. Sandra Young-Eriguel.  

Seven of Eriguel’s supporters were wounded in the ambush that also left two of his bodyguards dead.

Eriguel was shot while addressing candidates of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections in Barangay Capas, Agoo at around 7 p.m. 

Felizardo Villanueva, a losing candidate for barangay captain, was arrested and charged with three counts of murder over the incident.
