LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines —Seventeen families displaced by Mayon Volcano’s eruption returned home voluntarily after the volcano showed signs of slowing down this past week.

The evacuees, composed of 65 individuals, left the evacuation center without the permission of the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office, Apsemo chief Cedric Daep said yesterday.

The familes were from the villages of Matanag and Buyuan, both in Legazpi City, which are located within the eight-kilometer extended danger zone.

As of yesterday afternoon, at least 17,000 families or 66,097 persons remained in 60 evacuation centers.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that Mayon’s overall condition remained abnormal in the past 24 hours.

“Mayon’s activity in the past 24 hours was characterized by sporadic and weak lava fountaining, lava flow and degassing from the summit crater,” Phivolcs said.

It said three discrete lava fountaining episodes were recorded at 1:03 a.m. and 4:49 p.m. on Saturday and at 1:59 a.m. yesterday.

Alert Level 4 remains hoisted over Mayon due to its above threshold abnormal parameters such as sulphur dioxide emission, lava fountaining and bulging surface.
