Baclaran vendors to be relocated to new facility

Robertzon Ramirez - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Parañaque City government is set to build a flea market where vendors around the Redemptorist church in Baclaran will be transferred to ease traffic congestion in the area.

The bazaar-type flea market will be built on a one-hectare lot owned by the local government at Aseana complex, Mayor Edwin Olivarez said on Saturday.

Olivarez said the construction of the market would be funded by the city government.

He noted that hundreds of vendors caused monstrous traffic jams around the Baclaran church, especially those occupying the service road along Roxas Boulevard.

“This will solve the decade-old vending and traffic problems in Baclaran,” he said.

The local government allocated an initial budget of P40 million to construct 500 stalls, which will be ready for occupancy by the end of the year.

Olivarez said delivery vans and trucks would no longer be allowed to park around Baclaran church. Transport terminals would also be dismantled.

Olivarez said President Duterte and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority approved the project.

The mayor said Malacañang officials would inspect the market site.
