MANILA, Philippines - A drunk Customs broker and a police officer were wounded after they exchanged gunfire in Caloocan City at dawn yesterday.

Police Officer 1 John Michael Limarez was on surveillance operation on his motorcycle along 10th Avenue when Adriano Sumalucub, 42, of Lakandula street in Tondo, Manila, tried to stop him at the corner of Nadurata street at around 2:30 a.m., SPO4 Joel Montebon, Caloocan police assistant chief investigator, said.

Montebon said Limarez, assigned with the Police Community Precinct 2, pulled over and introduced himself as a policeman. But Sumalucub opened fire, hitting Limarez in the process.

Although wounded, Limarez jumped off his motorcycle and fired at Sumalucub.

They were both taken to the Caloocan City Medical Center for treatment.

Sumalucub was transferred to the Chinese General Hospital where he is being guarded by police.

Probers recovered 23 bullet shells at the scene.

Police said frustrated murder charges would be filed against Sumalucub.
