BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – At least 3,600 families living in low-lying areas were evacuated to safety from Saturday until yesterday morning due to floods spawned by a low-pressure area and the tail-end of a cold front in this city.

The evacuees, composed of more than 14,000 individuals came from 22 villages, according to the city disaster, risk reduction and management council.

By noon, the sun briefly shone over the city and a heavy downpour followed, dampening the spirits of the evacuees who wanted to return home.

The evacuees spent the night in public schools, covered courts and pilot evacuation centers in Barangay Bancasi.

Ten days ago, thousands also fled from their homes due to floods spawned by the tail-end of a cold front.

No water, power

Water and power supply were cut in some areas in the city.

Households served by the Butuan City Water District have been complaining that their supply is interrupted every time the city experienced heavy rains.

No classes

Classes at Agusan National High School in this city will be suspended today as classrooms are still occupied by the evacuees.

The school is the largest in terms of population in the Caraga Region.
