Necrological rites for ex-mayor Lopez set
MANILA, Philippines – The local government of Manila will hold necrological rites for the late mayor Mel Lopez at city hall this week, Mayor Joseph Estrada said yesterday.
Estrada said they were coordinating with the family of Lopez for the schedule of the necrological services.
“He was a good mayor. I condole with the Lopez family,” Estrada said.
Estrada said flags at city hall would be flown at half mast in honor of Lopez.
Former Manila mayor and now Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza extended his condolences to the Lopezes.
Lopez reportedly died of heart attack on Sunday. He was 81.
“We join our fellow Manileños and the nation in mourning the passing of former mayor Mel Lopez,” Atienza said.
Atienza and Lopez were among the people who were wounded when a Liberal Party rally in Plaza Miranda was bombed on Aug. 21, 1971.
Lopez was the chairman of the Philippine National Oil Co.
