Blackout in Abra as kwitis hits power cables
BANGUED, Abra, Philippines – Abra is in the dark as power went out in the province after a wayward kwitis (baby rocket) at a fireworks show hit power cables on Friday night.
A fire hit three automatic voltage regulators and several feeders of the main substation of the Abra Electric Cooperative (Abreco) in Bangued. The firecracker reportedly hit the main line of the substation.
Authorities declared the fire out after 30 minutes.
Loreto Seares Jr., Abreco general manager, said the fire could have been prevented if the substation is not overloaded.
Abreco has been asking the National Electrification Administration since 2014 for assistance for another five-megavolt ampere substation in the province because of overloading.
Seares said there is no schedule yet when power would be restored in the province.
It was only early last month when 80 percent of electricity in Abra was restored after Typhoon Lawin damaged its power lines.
