Laguna lawmaker faces poll protest

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – An election protest has been filed against Laguna Rep. Danilo Fernandez, who was proclaimed mayor of Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

In a five-page petition filed before the Commission on Elections (Comelec), Fernandez’s rival Arnel Gomez said the proclamation was “illegal and irregular.”

Gomez said Evelyn Parayan, chairman of the city board of canvassers that proclaimed Fernandez, is not the election officer of Sta. Rosa.

He said Parayan was transferred to Sta. Rosa from Calamba without authority from the poll body.

“The substitution was irregular since it was made by the regional election director and not the provincial election supervisor as provided under the rules,” Gomez said.

Fernandez’s proclamation was based on “imported” secure digital cards and not on canvassed or consolidated electronically transmitted results, he added.
