Laguna mayor who survived gun attack reelected
LAGUNA, Philippines – The mayor of Calauan, Laguna who survived a gun attack in March has won in his reelection bid.
Buenafrido “George” Berris, who ran as an independent, garnered 18,197 votes against Kindsly Kraft’s 8,668 votes.
In the vice mayoral race, Allan Jun Sanchez, a son of detained former Calauan mayor Antonio Sanchez, garnered 12,692 votes against Joseph Larona’s 7,086.
Berris was about to enter his car after a meeting in Barangay Imok when he was shot. His driver Leonardo Taningco and Emmanuel Peña, a candidate for councilor, died in the attack, which probers said could be politically motivated.
A P700,000 reward had been offered for the arrest of the gunman. Berris positively identified the assailant through a sketch released by a special police task force.
