Eva Visperas - The Philippine Star

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines – The heaviest, longest and “prettiest” bangus (milkfish) took center stage during the Bangus Rodeo held in this city yesterday.

The heaviest bangus, which weighed 5.6 kilograms, outweighed last year’s winner, which was only 4.410 kilos.

The longest bangus measured 80.5 centimeters or 2.7 feet. It is longer by 76 centimeters compared to last year’s winner.

Each bangus entry was measured from the tip of the mouth to the tip of the tail.

The prettiest bangus was judged based on its clear and round eyes; fine, smooth and orderly scales; small and “beautiful” head; firm but soft flesh, red gills, pleasant odor as well as weight of not less than half and not more than one kilo.

The owners of the heaviest, longest and prettiest bangus received P15,000, P10,000 and P5,000, respectively, as well as trophies and certificates.

Contests for the fastest bangus deboner, fastest bangus eater  and fastest bangus classifier were also held.

First, second and third placers in each category received P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000, respectively.
