Surigao municipal councilor bet shot dead

Ben Serrano - The Philippine Star

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – A candidate for councilor in San Francisco, Surigao del Norte was gunned down on Sunday.

Ernesto Retorta, 55, was on his way home after attending a Valentine’s Day barangay party at past 2 a.m. when unidentified men fired at him.

Police said Retorta died at the scene from 14 gunshot wounds.

Retorta, former chairman of Barangay Macopa, was running for councilor under the Liberal Party (LP).

He was the second LP local leader killed in Surigao del Norte since the start of the election period on Jan. 10.

Allen Silagan, 57, LP coordinator in Bacuag town, died last month, one week after he was shot at a beach resort where he was the caretaker.

Local LP leaders condemned the killings, which they believe were politically motivated. They vowed to pursue justice for the families of the victims.
