MMDA to reroute EDSA traffic for People Power anniversary

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced that traffic on EDSA would be rerouted for the 30th People Power Revolution Anniversary on February 25.

MMDA Chairman Emerson Carlos said that although February 25 has been declared a non-working holiday by Malacañang, it is still necessary to come up with a traffic management plan.

Carlos said there is a need to reroute traffic as an interactive museum would be set-up on White Plains Avenue on February 10.

According to Carlos, with the setting-up of the museum, the westbound lane of White Plains Avenue will be closed to allow the installation of the nine-hall museum.

The museum will showcase the events that led to the “People Power Revolution,” the MMDA said.

Aside from the commuters and private motorists who will be affected by the traffic re-routing, Carlos said residents of posh subdivisions in the area, such as Corinthian Garden and St. Ignatius, were also on the closure of White Plains Avenue.

“We don’t want to get into an argument with the residents regarding the yearly celebration of EDSA People Power Revolution,” Carlos said.

MMDA personnel will help in the clearing of the plant boxes, bike shelters and concrete barriers along White Plains Avenue to give way for the museum and food stalls that will be set up during the event.

Based on the initial MMDA traffic management plan for the People Power anniversary this year. EDSA will be closed from the corner of Ortigas Avenue to Santolan on the midnight of February 25 for the annual “salubungan” re-enactment.

To help ease traffic congestions, the MMDA will be implementing “zipper” or counter-flow lanes on EDSA during the event.
