MMDA collects less New Year garbage

Rosette Adel - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines – The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Sunday said that its personnel collected lesser New Year trash in Metro Manila this year.

After the New Year festivities, MMDA Metro Parkway Clearing Group Chief Francis Martinez said its personnel collected a total of 319 tons or 1,086 cubic meters of garbage from January 1 to 3, which was lower than the 2,000 cubic meters collected in 2015.

Martinez said that the light rains that poured on New Year’s Eve toward January 1 might have helped in reducing the amount of garbage for it might have stopped the public from lighting up more firecrackers.

Most of the waste materials collected after the New Year revelries were firecracker residues, cigarette butts, plastic bags, bottles, papers and food wrappers.

Martinez noted that the MMDA workers were designated in various cities in Metro Manila which include parks and leisure areas, Rizal Park and Baywalk, Manila.
