Quake jolts Surigao Norte

MANILA, Philippines – An earthquake registering a magnitude of 5.2 rocked parts of Surigao del Norte yesterday but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, state seismologists said.

The tremor occurred at 6:11 a.m. with its epicenter 30 kilometers northeast of San Isidro, Surigao del Norte, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

It was reportedly felt at Intensity 4 in San Isidro, Burgos and Santa Monica in Surigao del Norte; Intensity 3 in Surigao City; and Intensity 2 in Loreto, Dinagat province as well as in Mainit and Socorro, Surigao del Norte.

The quake had a depth of 60 km and was tectonic in origin.

Phivolcs warned the public of possible aftershocks.
