Policewoman helps woman deliver baby on bus

Eva Visperas - The Philippine Star

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines – A policewoman has been cited for helping a woman deliver her baby on a bus in Ilocos Sur.

Police Officer 1 Flores Diga said it was her first time to handle such a situation.

Diga, a beat patroller of the Santiago police station in Ilocos Sur, was conferred a Medalya ng Papuri for the incident that occurred on a Fariñas bus.

The driver pulled over near the police station to ask help for Myrna Respicio, who was about to give birth.

Diga, a former nursing student, said she was initially nervous, noting she had no medical instruments with her.

She helped facilitate the delivery without any complication or injury to both the mother and the child.

Respicio, who was with her four-year-old son, said she did not expect to give birth yet. She said she was on his way to a clinic for checkup.

Diga brought Respicio and her baby to the Candon City Hospital.
