Cop shot dead in restaurant

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – A police officer was killed in an attack by unidentified assailants who barged into his restaurant in Lasam, Cagayan on Saturday night.

Senior Police Officer 1 Ronel Saturno was in the kitchen when the armed men arrived at the establishment located at La Verna Resort in Barangay Centro at around 7 p.m.

The men reportedly looked for Saturno, claiming they were there to kill him, according to Chief Inspector Ramil Alipio, town police chief.

Sensing trouble, Saturno came out from the kitchen but was shot by the armed men.

Saturno, who was assigned to the Saguday police station, was named as one of Cagayan Valley’s 10 outstanding policemen in 2011.

He was among 11 officers charged by the National Bureau of Investigation with obstruction of justice for preventing NBI agents from transporting a jueteng operator.
